About 40 years after Jesus told them these things, Jerusalem was indeed destroyed by the Romans, and so was the temple. It was a dreadful time for the Jews, unlike any other. But when Jesus had spoken to his disciples to prepare them for the things that would happen, he was also referring to the distant future. And he wasn’t through yet. To understand what Jesus was about to tell them now, the disciples would have to remember that Jesus would not be with them much longer. He would soon leave to go to the Father. Before leaving them, he wanted them to know that one day he would return to this world. “No one knows what day the Son of Man will come,” Jesus said, “not even the angels, nor the Son himself.
