He now spent all his time in Judea, and many people came out to the other side of the Jordan to find him. Large crowds followed him, and he taught them and healed many. Among those in the crowd were Pharisees, hoping to trap Jesus in his own words. So they picked a subject that brought sharp division between leading rabbis. They asked Jesus, “Does the Law permit a man to divorce his wife?” Now there were two main opinions that the rabbis held. One group said a man could divorce his wife if she displeased him in any way. The other group said a man could divorce only if his wife had been unfaithful.
