198 Sarai and Hagar

Genesis 16:1-16, TBC Book One, Chapter 12
Ten years passed since the Lord made his promise to Abram, and Sarai was beginning to lose hope. . . . Abram was now 85; Sarai was in her 70s. What woman her age had ever gotten pregnant? Sarai knew the promise God made to her husband. But what about her inability to conceive? Deep in thought, she stared at the servant with her infant. Perhaps there is another way. . . .

She said to Abraham, “Since the Lord has kept me from having children, why don’t we build our family through my maidservant? . . .”

So Hagar became pregnant [with Ishmael], and she began to lord it over Sarai. . . . [Then} Sarai made her life so miserable that Hagar slipped out and ran away. . . . But all this while, the Lord had been watching. . . .
