John 4:1-42, TBC Book Two, Chapter 18 On the way to Galilee, Jesus traveled through Samaria, and he did something that surprised everyone. By noon he was hot and tired, so he rested near a well and sent his disciples for food. When a Samaritan woman came, Jesus said to her, “May I have a drink?” The woman was shocked. “You are a Jew, and you’re asking me for a drink?” The Jews never spoke to Samaritans. They resented these Gentile-Jews, who had built their own temple in Samaria. Jesus continued, “If you knew the gift of God and who I was, you would be asking me for a drink, and you would have living water.” “Sir, you have nothing to draw out water. So where will you get this ‘living water’? Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us this well?” Jesus answered, “Whoever drinks the water I give will never thirst, for it will become a spring of eternal life.” “Then give me some,” she said, “so I won’t have to keep coming here.” “Go get your husband,” Jesus said, “then come back.” “I have no husband,” she replied. “You are quite right,” Jesus said. “You have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband.” The woman looked shocked. . . .
