179 Got Salvation?

1 John 1–5, TBC Book Two, Chapter 179
Though the author of this letter never identified himself, consensus among the early church fathers pointed to the Apostle John. Written as a circular letter to a number of churches, its purpose was to confront heresy and reassure believers of their salvation through Christ.

We who were witnesses of the one who has always existed with the Father, the Word of life, who came and appeared to us, we proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you too may have fellowship with the Father and with his son, Jesus Christ.

The message we heard from him we declare to you: God is light; in him is no darkness. One who claims to have the light of heavenly insight but who lives like one walking in darkness cannot be proclaiming truth. Those who claim they are sinless are self-deceived, void of truth.

My hope in writing to you is so that you will not sin, but I want you to know that anyone who does sin, has an advocate—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, who has made atonement for the sins of the whole world. Walking in his light, we hold this assurance: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us, restoring our relationship with God.

The way we come to know him is by obeying his commands. If anyone claims to have a relationship with Christ but does not obey God’s word, that person is a liar. Whoever has a relationship with Christ imitates Christ, following his example.

What I am expressing is not a new command; you have heard it from the beginning. One who claims to have the light of God’s truth but hates another person is still living in darkness. . . .

Dear children, the world’s final hour is approaching. Remain in Christ and do not be led astray by the spirit of the antichrist. . . .
