175 Paul’s Final Letter

2 Timothy 1–4, TBC Book Two, Chapter 175
Like Peter, Paul also had a word from the Lord that revealed his time on earth was coming to a close. He was now back in Rome, imprisoned by Emperor Nero, chained in a dark dungeon. With fatherly concern, he penned his final admonitions to Timothy—and to the Church.

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by God’s will, to Timothy, my dear son. Grace, mercy, and peace to you, from God the Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. . . .

Be strong in the grace our Lord provides. Guard what you have heard me say, instructing those who will faithfully teach others also. . . . Stay focused so you can fulfill what God has given you to do.

Remember that Jesus Christ, who descended from David, has been raised from the dead. This is the gospel, for which I suffer, chained like a criminal. But God’s word will never be chained. . . . 

Know that the last days will be filled with depravity. People will be lovers of themselves and lovers of money, proud and arrogant, abusive, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unloving, unforgiving, brutal and brash, treacherous, and obsessed with self-gratification. They will practice religion but deny the power of God, always learning but never acknowledging the truth.

Those who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and charlatans will go from bad to worse, deceiving others and being deceived. So cling to the holy truths of Scripture, which point people to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. . . .

A time will come when people will reject sound doctrine and exalt teachers who tell them what they want to hear. They will turn away from truth. . . .
