Matthew 27:45-66; John 19:28-42; Mark 15:33-47; Luke 23:44-56 TBC Book Two, Chapter 108 Something strange was beginning to happen in Judea. An eerie darkness had swept over the land—but it was only noon. For the next three hours, darkness reigned. At Golgotha, all was quiet, until the people heard a shout. “Eloi, Eloi!” the voice shouted in Aramaic, “Lama sabachthani?” It was Jesus. Those standing nearby thought he was calling for Elijah. They didn’t know that he was saying, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” His life was ebbing away. In Hebrew, he said, “I am thirsty.” One of the men ran to where the wine vinegar was kept and poured some on a sponge. He placed the sponge on a hyssop stalk and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. But the people shouted, “That’s enough! Let’s see if Elijah comes to rescue him.” Jesus whispered, “It is finished.” Then, in a loud voice, he shouted, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. At that very moment, people felt the earth shaking beneath their feet. Rocks began to split apart. It was an earthquake! Huge stones that covered tombs suddenly broke away. Meanwhile, back in Jerusalem, something extraordinary had just happened in the temple. . . . (See THE BIBLE CLICKS, Book Two, Chapter 108, for the rest of the story.) A proverb to guide you: ‘My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?’ says David, says Jesus, . . . and so will we. But hold on till ‘It is finished!’ A promise to cling to: “And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.” Matthew 27:50-54 NIV A praise to fill you: Rise Again Dallas Holm [Can skip ad after first 5 seconds] Comments are closed.
